Forward Controls Design Receiver Extension Carbine, or commonly known as the REF is a 6-position carbine receiver extension that is standard for an AR15 and M4. To the untrained eye, receiver extensions may all look similar or serve the same purpose, but the REF by Forward Controls Design is somewhat different. With the philosophy of function over form and form follows function, Forward Controls Design opted to all together make a different receiver extension.

The REF is simply a carbine receiver extension done the way of Forward Controls Design. The features may not be new individually but combined they offer the shooter a new perspective. There are additional drain holes in the 2nd and 5th latch position as well the drain hole at the tip of the TDP spec carbine. The side stock latch position indicators are located at 3 and 9 o’clock due to many of the Magpul stocks that do not use the lock release lever that is found on the Colt M4 and SOPMOD stocks.
